Sounds of Silence |
September 2013 Challenge – “Sounds of Silence”
Title: “Sounds of
Silence”
There is nothing better than a drive in the country on a
summer’s day, and this inspired my “Sounds of Silence” piece. Even with the radio blasting my favourite
tune, birds singing in the background, and the wind whistling with the window
down, I find my mind can just peacefully absorb the surroundings in silence.
This piece is done with confetti size pieces of fabric from
my stash bag. I’ve fused them down and
machine stitch down with tulle. This was
a very much improvised exercise with only a photograph to work from. I didn’t test the techniques, rather, I just
sat down and started cutting small pieces of fabric and “painted” as I
went. The one thing I didn’t do was step
back a few times, so afterwards, I needed to readjust the perspective a bit.

Your picture is so evocative of summer in the countryside. I like the idea of your own private silence, even in a world of sounds.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great picture, reminds me of our childhood drives. Love the technique and the shadows, it has that rich feel of silence in the country
ReplyDeleteBeautiful work. The silence of the country far away from the city.
ReplyDeleteYour piece makes me feel that whilst we are active (with the busyness of life) our getting away from it all - brings quietness - a sound of silence. Love your confetti work, and use of colour.
ReplyDeleteA charming piece, Katie. I have yellow canola fields all around me at the moment and it really does make you feel wonderfully peaceful.
ReplyDeleteI can easily "see" the road you've travelled. All the tidbits remind me of brushstrokes in an Impressionist painting. Lovely.
ReplyDeleteI really like that you have tried a new technique in this quilt and that you have succeeded so well. Very well done.
ReplyDeleteI think you have achieved the sound of silence with this piece. I am wondering what is just over the hill? Very lovely piece.
