Song of Solomon by Linden Lancaster

'Song of Solomon' (or 'Song of Songs') is a book of the Old Testament. It tells of the intimate story between a young King Solomon and a Jewish maiden, their feelings for each other and their longing to be together.
I started off with a lovely soft screen printed background. Various elements referencing love were then added. I printed the text from an antique bible (that was falling apart) onto fabric, which was fused on. The music is from the song ‘When you were Sweet Sixteen’, one of my favourite love songs made famous by the Irish band 'The Furies'. Lace and buttons, represent a wedding gown.  I have used warm colours to depict passion. Roses, the flower of love, have been thread sketched/quilted in a contrasting black thread over the top to add some definition and  unification. Darker reds, yellows and pinks were then splashed into the flowers with inks and crayons.

  1. This is an interesting interpretation. The song of Salomon is supposed to be the ultimate love song. This piece tells all about love, the colours, the lace and flowers and the hidden text, as we can hide our love in our hearts.

  2. All the layers make up a fascinating piece which repays several looks into the components, but yet is totally a complete piece of art. The colours are exactly right for the subject and the roses.

  3. Linden, this is such an interesting quilt, so many layers to investigate, the colour palate is warm and rich and I love the crisp contrast of the white lace and black stitch lines.

  4. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! The layers and different elements are all wonderful. What amazes me as well is that, despite the color palette, this still has a loving/peaceful appearance. I imagine that wasn't easy to achieve.

  7. I like the bright colours, the flowers and the black outlines. Every detail, such as roses, lace and the musicnotes, fit to the "Romantic Love".

  8. What a lovely piece, Linden. Looking at it it remains me of "The Sleeping Beaty", so this piece is really a piece about love.
